Urging Indian Politicians to Reduce Election Campaign Pollution
The Issue
In India, the celebratory and competitive spirit surrounding elections often comes at a high environmental cost. The extensive use of helicopters, private jets, and temporary helipads results in substantial carbon emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change. Additionally, the use of a large number of vehicles not only adds to air pollution but also leads to traffic congestion, affecting daily life.
The ubiquitous display of plastic banners, polyester or plastic flags, signs, cutouts, and the use of plastic water bottles, plates, glasses, and cutlery during election campaigns contribute to severe plastic waste. These materials often end up in landfills or, worse, in our rivers and oceans, threatening marine life and ecosystems. With India's vast population and numerous elections, the cumulative environmental impact is enormous.
Agricultural lands are being indiscriminately used for rally grounds and temporary structures, causing damage to land that should be used for food production. Such practices compromise both environmental sustainability and food security.
Moreover, the health implications of this pollution cannot be ignored. Increased air pollution contributes to respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and other health issues among the population. The indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste can lead to water contamination, affecting millions of people who rely on local water sources.
We are urging all politicians to pledge to mark World Environment Day on 5 June 2026, and to act responsibly to mitigate environmental damage during elections. Propose guidelines for environmentally friendly campaigning methods: prioritize digital campaigning over physical materials, enforce stricter vehicle emissions standards, and regulate land and airspace usage.
Democracy should thrive without compromising our planet's health. By reducing unnecessary waste and emissions, political leaders can set an example for sustainable practices that align with democratic values and environmental stewardship. Let us hold our leaders accountable for protecting the environment as a key part of democratic responsibility.
Please sign this petition to urge Indian politicians to commit to environmentally sustainable election practices. Together, we can make a difference for our country and our planet.
